Orlistat: interaction with other drugs

It is extremely important to consult your doctor before taking any medications. There are a few medications that can cause a reaction when combined with Orlistat. Your doctor should be aware of the list of medications that may have problems when combined with Orlistat and will advise you on the proper precautions that should be taken.

Medications that contain an immune system suppressant such as cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune will need to adjust their schedule of Orlistat around the cyclosporine intake. You will want to make sure that you take your cyclosporine at least two hours before or a minimum of two hours after your plan on taking your Orlistat.

It is important to make sure that you provide your doctor with a full list of vitamins and natural supplements that you may be taking. While you may believe that vitamins could not be affected by other medications this is not the case. Certain supplements may cause your blood to thin, clot or all kinds of other issues and combining it with Orlistat can directly affect the outcome.

Anticoagulants: warfarin (Coumadin);

Diabetes medications: glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (DiaBeta, Dynase, Micronase), metformin (Glucophage), and insulin;Blood Pressure medication

Medications are not the only thing that can cause issues when combined with Orlistat.

Certain conditions may not react well when you are planning on starting a regimen of Orlistat.

Organ transplant patients need to let their doctor know if they are unaware of their history.

Cholestasis (condition in which the flow of bile from the liver is blocked)

Malabsorption syndrome (problems absorbing food).

Eating disorders: anorexia nervosa or bulimia


Kidney stones

Pancreatitis (inflammation or swelling of the pancreas)


Thyroid disease.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant


Several of these conditions may prevent you from being able to take Orlistat. This means that you will have to search for another weight loss option, but your doctor should be more than knowledgeable about other weight loss options that are available to you.
